Reading to your baby – Why I read to Spike and why I think its important

I’ve read to Spike since day one. I literally don’t think there has been a single day in her life that she wasn’t read to. At 6 months old I started reading the first Harry Potter book to her while she was snoozing on me. In fact, I even did a little bit of reading to her when I was pregnant. She developed a love for reading early on and days were spent reading books when she was a toddler. Now she’s learning to read herself, but I wanted to reminisce and share a bit about the reasons why reading to your baby is important. Reading from an early age…

Thank you for helping shape Spike into the girl she has become – An open letter to my daughter’s nursery

Dear Spike’s nursery, For the last 3 and half years you have looked after Spike when I couldn’t. There were days when I needed to drop her off because she was testing my patience and others, more, when I wished that I could stay with her. But each and every time I left her, I knew she was safe.  She was being looked after by people that loved her. People who I could trust. People I knew would keep her safe no matter what.  When Spike started, she was only with you 2 days a week. But she was treated like any other. The enthusiasm I got from all the…

How we’ve ditched the dummy – and all of Spike’s excuses for not sleeping since

Around 18 months ago I spoke about ditching the dummy. Spike had just turned two and we’d managed to get her to only have her dummy at nap and bedtimes. I thought it would be a few months or so after that when she gave it up completely. But I was wrong. Bedtime dummy Spike transitioned well from having her dummy all the time to just having it at bed and nap times. There were a few meltdowns but all in all within a week she was fine. However whenever I tried to get her to sleep without it all hell broke loose. It was only when she was that…

Age differences. Is there a perfect age gap between siblings?

Is there a perfect age gap between siblings? Scrolling through Facebook I see a pregnancy announcement. This makes the 4th mama I know with a child around Spike's age either pregnant or just having had a baby. Don't get me wrong I'm over the moon all these mamas. But there is no second baba on the way here, despite me always thinking there was a perfect age gap between siblings. I grew up as the youngest of three. With a brother 3 years older and a sister a year old than that. I used to hate the age difference between us. When I was little, they both seemed too old…

To my daughter on your 2nd birthday

Dear Spike, You are two. All of a sudden, in the blink of an eye, you have been in our lives for more than 2 years. Inside and outside my body, I can barely remember a time you weren’t around. Yet it feels live only yesterday you were born. In the last 6 months you have had a lot of changes. You moved into a new class at nursery and since then you have blossomed into an incredible little girl. You’ve got such a strong personality when you allow yourself to let it show and you adore your football. I do wish you were a little more outgoing when it…

    On this day…

I’m not sure how many people reading this will be familiar with Apple’s photos app, but I can imagine its a lot of you. Today my photo app told me it has a new memory for me. An On This Day… from 2015. On this day two years ago I had just begun my maternity leave. Two years ago I was brewing a Spike. Two years ago today I had a photo shot to capture memories of something beautiful. I had always wanted a maternity photo shoot doing. I pinterested exactly what I wanted and was lucky enough to find McAvoy Photography and win myself a bump to baby photoshoot. That…

My top 5 Instagram pictures – March 2017

I can’t believe its April already. It’s so wrong how fast this year is going. I will have a two year old next month! When did that happen! Anyway. March on Instagram was a big one for me with one of my posts getting the highest engagement I’ve ever had. It’s obviously my top photo on this post and I understand, and appreciate, that it’s all due to how good my partner is at capturing special moments. We also went away and we spent a lot of time together as a family which results in a happy Spike so that also shines through on my pictures! In 5th place this…

    Definitely not a baby anymore…

This week Spike turned 22 months old. Which is nothing. Except to me its something. That milestone means that she is just 2 months away from being 2. And that means she is definitely not be a baby anymore! A 2 year old is big. A 2 year old is not a baby, its a toddler for sure. And a 2 year old means I am very nearly 29… which is a post in itself! I’ve been preparing for this for a while as I knew that once she hits 2, she goes into a new room at nursery. So since Christmas I’ve been worrying slightly about the meltdowns that may occur…

Should I be feeling mum guilt?

I often wonder if I should be feeling the ‘mum guilt’ more than I do. This week I had my probation review. I passed, which is amazing as I love my job. It means, however, that it’s been 6 months since I started my ‘new’ job. 6 months since I went back to work full time with a toddler in tow. And 6 months since that toddler went full time at nursery. At first it was hard. And I’m not gunna lie; there are still hard days. Especially when I need to have my work head on but I can’t help think about how she’s getting on at nursery. It’s a struggle…
